A comprehensive hearing evaluation looks at how well you hear sounds and understand speech, while also helping determine the type and degree of hearing loss. During the evaluation, you’ll listen through headphones or insert earphones for tones at different pitches and volumes and indicate when you hear them. You’ll also listen to and repeat words or sentences to assess how well you understand speech.

We also perform bone-conduction testing. A small device is placed behind the ear or on the forehead and delivers gentle vibrations through the skull directly to the inner ear. By comparing your responses to air- and bone-conduction testing, your hearing healthcare professional can determine whether hearing loss is related to the outer or middle ear, the inner ear, or a combination of both.

What to Expect During Your Hearing Test

1. Video Otoscopy

Before your hearing test, we will use a small camera to look inside your ears. This allows us to examine your ear canals and eardrums and check for things such as earwax, irritation, blockage, or other conditions that may affect your hearing test. You’ll be able to see what we see on a screen, and the procedure is quick and comfortable.

2. Headphones & Sounds

You’ll listen through headphones to a range of tones and speech while we measure and record your hearing responses.

3. Technology Test Drive

Interpreting Your Hearing Test Results

After your testing is complete, we’ll show your results on a special chart called an audiogram. An audiogram plots sound volume (decibels) against frequency (pitch), showing which sounds you hear easily and where hearing loss may lie. Lower decibel points typically mean better hearing. Most people within the normal range of hearing can hear sounds quieter than 25 decibels, roughly the volume of a whisper.
